Tues 4 Feb 2025: Mark 5:21-43.

Today's Gospel reading has an account of two healings and both occur through physical contact.

오늘 복음에는 두 가지 치유에 관한 이야기가 나오는데, 둘 다 신체적 접촉을 통해 일어납니다.

In the first case the woman touches Jesus’ cloak and is cured;  in the second case Jesus takes the girl by the hand.

첫 번째에서는 한 부인이 예수님의 옷을 만져 치유되고, 두 번째에서는 예수님께서 소녀의 손을 잡으십니다.

This physical contact is very significant because at the time of Jesus these two women were considered impure and cannot, therefore, be physically touched.

이 신체적 접촉이 매우 중요한데, 그 이유는 예수님 시대에 이 두 여인이 불결한 존재로 여겨져 접촉해서는 안되었기 때문입니다.

One is impure because she suffers from blood loss and the other because she is dead. Yet, Jesus allows Himself to be touched and is not afraid to touch.

그 부인은 출혈중이었기에, 그리고 소녀는 죽은 상태였기에 불결합니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 그 불결한 이가 당신 자신을 만지도록 허락하시고, 또 만지는 것을 두려워하지 않으십니다.

Even before He carries out a physical healing, Jesus challenges the false religious belief that God separates the pure, placing them on one side, from the impure on another.

육체적 치유를 행하시기도 전에, 하느님께서 정결한 자 따로, 불결한 자 따로 분리하신다는 잘못된 종교적 믿음에 도전하시는 것입니다.

God does not make this kind of separation, because we are all His children and because He loves everyone. God does not keep us at a distance - God is not ashamed of us.

하느님은 이런 식의 분리를 하지 않으십니다. 우리 모두 그분의 자녀이고 하느님께서는 모두를 사랑하시기 때문입니다. 그분은 우리를 멀리 두지 않으시고 우리를 부끄러워하지 않으십니다.

On the contrary, God draws near to each person, with their own particular past, and he takes each of us by the hand to welcome and loves us as we are.  

오히려 하느님께서는 각각의 고유한 과거를 지닌 각 사람에게 가까이 다가가시며, 우리 각자의 손을 잡고, 있는 그대로의 우리를 환영하고 사랑하십니다.

However today, the Risen Christ can only do that through us because we are the Body of Christ.

그러나 오늘날 부활하신 그리스도께서는 우리를 통해서만 그렇게 하실 수 있는데, 우리가 바로 그리스도의 몸이기 때문입니다.

If we want God to touch people it will have to be through our hands. In the 16th century, St Teresa of Avila expressed this truth so clearly. I qoute: 

하느님께서 사람들을 만지시기를 원한다면 그것은 우리의 손을 통해서만 가능합니다. 16세기에 아빌라의 성녀 데레사는 이 진리를 아주 분명하게 다음과 같이 표현했습니다.

'Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes through which he looks with
Compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,
Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.

'그리스도께서는 이 지상에 아무런 몸이 없습니다. 당신의 몸 밖에는,

손도 발도 없습니다. 당신의 손과 발 밖에는,

그분께서는 당신의 눈을 통해 이 세상을 연민의 눈으로 바라보고 계십니다.

당신의 발로 선을 행하기 위해 걸어 나가십니다.

당신의 손으로 온 세상을 축복하십니다.

Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,

Yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes through which he looks
with compassion on this world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

당신의 손이 그분의 손이고, 당신의 발이 그분의 발이며,

당신의 눈이 그분의 눈이고, 당신이 그분의 몸입니다.

그리스도께서는 이 지상에 아무런 몸이 없습니다. 당신의 몸 밖에는

손도 발도 없습니다. 당신의 손과 발 밖에는

그분께서는 당신의 눈을 통해 이 세상을 연민의 눈으로 바라보고 계십니다.

A French Songwriter wrote a hymn, based on that writing of St Teresa, entitled “I seek the Face of the Lord'”. The late Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan translated it into Korean - '나는 주님을 찾습니다' (Hymn 404 in the Catholic Hymn Book). It is one of my favourite hymns.

프랑스의 한 작곡가는 이 성녀 데레사의 글을 바탕으로 '주님의 얼굴을 찾습니다'라는 제목의 성가를 만들었는데, 고 김수환 추기경께서 한국어로 번역한 '나는 주님을 찾습니다'(가톨릭성가 404번)가 바로 이 찬송가입니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 성가 중 하나입니다.

At this Mass, let us pray that we may be the Body of the Risen Christ reaching out and touching those who are in pain or rejected in our society and world.

이 미사를 통해 우리가 사회와 세상에서 고통 받고 거부당하는 이들에게 손을 내밀고 어루만지는 부활하신 그리스도의 몸이 되기를 함께 기도합시다.
